Single Family Homes vs Renting an Apartment: Which is Right for You?

January 27, 2021
Thank you for your interest in Rivington

It’s time to move on from your current living situation, the question is to where? You have two great options here in DeBary, FL: buy a single-family home/townhome or rent an apartment. Have you given much thought to the pros and cons of each? Let’s break them down a little further here:

  1. Maintenance

Though apartments come in all different sizes, a single-family home generally has more living space than an apartment. This is great if you have a partner, kids, or both, or simply like your space. The flip side of a bigger home, of course, is that all of this living space means more for you to clean and maintain.

  1. Yard

One thing you’ll absolutely never find with an apartment is your own yard. The green space is invaluable! Kids need to get out and run around. Pets need to go potty. Many adults like to spend their down time working on their green thumb. Perhaps you simply like to sit on your porch with a cup of coffee and enjoy a tiny slice of nature. All of this is possible with a house. An apartment, on the other hand, may have a playground or a large field near your place, but it will be shared with everyone else living in the complex. A little slice of heaven that is yours and yours alone is only possible with a house.

  1. Parking

A single-family home will have a garage and a driveway that fits a car or two. This is a much more convenient way to live! As well, visitors can usually park along the street in front of the house. By comparison, apartment complexes may not guarantee you a parking space, especially one right next to your house.

  1. Privacy

One factor that might have you leaning more towards a for sale home rather than an apartment is privacy. Apartment complexes have multiple residents living in very close proximity, meaning that apartment dwellers often share walls and common spaces with their neighbors. This may not be an issue if you have quiet, respectful neighbors. However, you don’t have control over who lives in the apartment! Your new apartment living situation could turn sour very quickly if they enjoy loud music or like to party late into the early morning. If you need peace and quiet, you probably need a single-family home.

Hopefully, looking at these four factors is helpful in your decision-making process. If you need space, peace, and a guaranteed place to park, you’ll be much happier in a house. On the other hand, if you prefer smaller bills and lighter maintenance responsibilities, an apartment is more your style. The choice is yours!
